Wounded Healer

An excerpt from Wounded Healer, edited by Rachel Naomi Remen, MD, 1994, written by a cancer survivor:

Still it is next to impossible
to do this alone.
We need the loving truth of others to be well.
Inevitably when one is thrust into life,
Into crisis, into transformation
Without notice or instruction
Some come with us and are forever changed
While others watch as we are forced out to sea.
It is the power of love
that enables those who come along
and in truth,
a language of experience is unearthed
that cannot be translated
to those who stay behind.

A Prayer for the Persecuted

Merciful Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, listen to the cries of your children who are being oppressed by the wicked who hate you. In particular, we ask that you would deal with the men of the underworld in Nigeria who are hurting, harassing, and beating pastors and their families, and also extorting money and other valuables from them. (Add other persecuted Christians you know.) If only you would slay the wicked, O God!

We pray for all your children who suffer persecution for the sake of your name and the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. Comfort them with your Holy Spirit and deliver them from the hands of their enemies. Do not permit the memory of your name to be removed from the earth. Do not let the enemies of your truth have occasion to dishonour and blaspheme your name. But if it is your will that persecuted Christians by their death bear witness to the truth and glorify your name, comfort them in their sufferings. May they accept their trials as from your fatherly hand and remain faithful in life and death to the honour of your name, to the edification of the church, and to their salvation.

May we ourselves and all Christians embrace the same suffering, and consider it an honour not only to believe in your Son, but also to suffer for him. In his name we pray.

Based on a prayer request from the NKST, the Reformed Church among the Tiv; Psalm 139:19-22; Philippians 1:29,30; and “A Prayer for All the Needs of Christendom” in the Book of Praise.

Read and sing Psalm 79. See GENEVAN 79 in the Book of Praise: Anglo-Genevan Psalter available at www.bookofpraise.ca.
